Trail Riding Etiquette and Safety
Here we focus on trails and multi-use paths. See details from the Florida Department
of Transportation for full
rules of the road. Bicycles are classified as vehicles and subject to
all rules of the road.
- Florida law requires all bicyclists under age 16 to wear a
bicycle helmet.
- Be courteous of all trail users (bicyclists, joggers,
walkers, wheelchairs, skateboarders, rollerbladers).
- Keep right and no more than two abreast.
- Pass on the left. Be sure the lane is clear before passing and leave enough distance between yourself
and the other user.
- Give audible signals when passing (voice, bell or whistle).
- Travel in a predictable and consistent manner, keeping control of your
bike at all times and travel at a reasonable speed.
- Do not block the trail, move your bike off to the side when stopped.
- Yield when entering or crossing trails, and yield to pedestrians at crosswalks.
- Do not use trails while under the influence of alcohol or
drugs.
- Clean up your litter.
- Keep pets on leashes and clean up after your pet.
- Carry identification.
- Motorized vehicles are prohibited, with the exception of electric wheelchairs,
golf carts operated by trails staff, and public maintenance and safety
vehicles.
- Equestrian trail use where applicable:
- Use designated parking and hitch areas.
- Remain on the designated equestrian path.
- Use verbal warnings and caution when passing other trail users.
- Dismount at multi-user bridges and walk across.
About Central Florida Weather
- Respect the weather. Be aware of heat and humidity.
- This is Florida, so be sure to bring food and water, suntan lotion, a
wide brimmed hat, and insect repellant.
- Central Florida has four seasons but comfortable for biking
year-round:
- Summers are hot and humid, and generally have afternoon
thunderstorms.
- Winters are
generally the dry season. There can be a few cold days with sub-freezing temperature,
but biking is comfortable most days.
- Spring and autumn with moderate temperatures and rainfall are the most pleasant
seasons for biking and outdoor recreational activities.
Be considerate of the environment - pick up
and dispose of all garbage.
